Interferry 2010 - New York
35th Annual Interferry Conference
New York: 3-6 October 2010
Conference Summary
A record 311 delegates attended Interferry’s 35th anniversary annual conference in New York when the global trade association returned to its US origins to discuss ‘navigating through a new world economy’.
In his final act before handing over the Interferry presidency, New York Water Taxi and Harbor Experience founder Tom Fox hosted a worldwide gathering that included 110 first-time delegates – another event record.
Noting that membership now extended to some 210 companies in 34 countries – after 130% growth in eight years – CEO Len Roueche commented: “More than ever before, ferry operators and suppliers must join forces to promote and defend common interests in the face of increasing commercial, environmental and safety challenges.”

Interferry Forum Demonstrates Industry’s Fighting Spirit
Delegates at trade association Interferry’s 34th annual conference have been warned that the ferry sector is under particular threat from financial and environmental pressures on the shipping industry.
More than 230 senior executives in Istanbul heard that raising finance and lowering air emissions would pose unique challenges for ferry operators in the wake of global economic meltdown and global warming.
Critical legal issues - notably the risk of corporate manslaughter charges - also came under the spotlight, but the potential for boom rather than gloom dominated other sessions focusing on new market opportunities, money-making IT applications and the Interferry/IMO joint initiative to boost ferry safety in developing nations.

Interferry 2008 - Hong Kong Conference Review
Interferry’s 33rd annual conference in Hong Kong (October 5-7) addressed the shipping industry’s latest challenges by demonstrating that in every crisis there is an opportunity. The trade association attracted a worldwide attendance of more than 250 delegates - close to the event record - with an upbeat programme showing how strategic thinking and cutting-edge technology can conquer hurdles like economic uncertainty, manning shortfalls and regulatory restraints.
Daily delegate bulletins set the tone by featuring ancient Chinese proverbs such as “be not afraid of growing slowly, be afraid only of standing still”. The sentiment was echoed across topics ranging from InterManager president Ole Stene’s recruitment solutions to Dubai’s plans for a massive water transport system to reduce serious road congestion.

STOCKHOLM CONFERENCE REVIEW
From global warming to superheating market forces, the 32nd Annual Interferry Conference in Stockholm probed the ferry sector’s hottest political, technical and commercial challenges under the theme of new visions for a new era. Some 200 industry leaders also heard that another of the trade association’s current concerns is coming to the boil, with a target of next spring to complete preparations for pilot projects in Bangladesh under a joint initiative with the IMO to slash ferry deaths in developing nations.
