Newly launched fast ferry operator SpeedFerries is to the file complaints with competition authorities accusing Channel ferry operators of running a cartel. SpeedFerries launched its Dover-to-Boulogne service last month offering a 50-minute, cars-only service.
The new operator claims its competitors have co-ordinated pricing and interavailability agreements, are taking unjustified and co-ordinated legal action against SpeedFerries and have been engaging in a ãdirty tricksä campaign against the company including attempts to bribe staff to quit. It also claims false accusations have been made on the companyâs safety and competence.
P&O Ferriesâ chief executive, Russ Peters, said: ãP&O Ferries totally refutes any such allegations. The cross-Channel ferry market is more competitive now that it has ever been. Our interest is in making sure that our customers get the best deal for the price available. We offer a high-quality product but we will inevitably adjust our prices according to the market.ä
A Hoverspeed spokesman said yesterday the company categorically denied that ãthere is any form of cartel being run by cross-Channel ferry operators in order to Îfixâ pricing on fares, schedules or any other aspect of service offered to passengers.
SeaFrance said: ãWhilst not aware of the specifics of any complaint, the market is highly competitive and SeaFrance categorically denies any involvement in a cartelä.
SeaFrance has announced a ¥2.44m net loss last year in a 12-month period that was marked by a price war between operators and the loss of substantial revenues from cigarette sales (due to a price increase dictated by government). Chairman Eudes Riblier said that any cost cuts it made did not lower the quality of its services to clients.
