INTERFERRY STUDENT PROGRAM

SPONSORED BY GERMANISCHER LLOYD

INTRODUCTION…

Interferry is a shipping association representing the ferry industry world-wide. There are over 200 member organizations from 25 countries, including owners and operators, shipbuilders and designers, equipment manufacturers and suppliers, naval architects and marine engineers, government agencies, shipbrokers and consultants, publishers and unions.

THE STUDENT PROGRAM…

Post secondary students are invited to participate by submitting a paper relevant to the ferry industry. While all subject areas related are eligible, Interferry would welcome presentations in areas such as:

  • Environmental impact (e.g. methods to reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emmissions; ship recycling)
  • New engineering and naval architecture design concepts (e.g. related to the safe return to port concept where the ship itself is considered as its own best lifeboat; new materials used such as composites; new technologies in building ferries; issues of noise, vibration and comfort)
  • Competition within the industry and with other modes of transport (e.g. new routes, cost saving aspects of ferries related to airlines)
  • Innovative marketing techniques
  • Exploring untapped markets
  • Ferries and tourism development

WHO MAY PARTICIPATE?

Students interested in the ferry industry and studying engineering, naval architecture, management, transportation, economics, environmental science or related areas are invited to put forward their best ideas on the above or related subjects. Students must be under 35 years of age as of December 31, 2008.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE…

Students are asked to prepare an abstract of not more than 400 words outlining the topic of their proposed presentation. This will be submitted to Interferry together with a short biography listing name, age, school, program, degree expected, expected date of graduation and name of faculty supervisor. The abstract and bio must be submitted to Interferry by June 2, 2008.

The Interferry Student Selection Committee will select a maximum of five (5) abstracts and will inform students by June 30th of the selection results.

The selected students will be invited to prepare a more complete paper and submit it to the Interferry Student Selection Committee by August 15th. The Committee will inform the winning student(s) by September 5th. The winning student(s) will be invited to make a 15 minute presentation of his or her paper at the Interferry Conference on October 6 or 7, 2008. The winning student(s) will also be invited to attend the entire conference from 5-7 October at the Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel in Hong Kong.
